  18. <p>     If George Bush finds recent polls gloomy, he can very well
  19. cheer himself up with the rosy sentiments flowing from Kuwait.
  20. The President is still vastly popular in the oil-rich country.
  21. So much so in fact that the U.S. embassy there has tactfully
  22. had to refuse offers from Kuwaitis eager to help bankroll the
  23. presidential campaign. "We'd rather stay with the man we know,"
  24. says one Kuwaiti. With such excitement, one wouldn't guess that
  25. the country is about to hold its own parliamentary elections
  26. next month. Gatherings meant to discuss local politics are now
  27. dominated by satellite TV broadcasts of the U.S. elections sent
  28. via CNN. And despite Bush's trailing Clinton in the polls, the
  29. Kuwaitis have victory on the brain. Says one: "If Bush gets
  30. re-elected, we'll slaughter a sheep to celebrate."
  31. </p>
  32. <p>RETHINKING THE RETRIAL?
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     The Iran-Contra trial of the CIA's Clair George ended in
  35. a hung jury last month, but independent counsel Lawrence Walsh
  36. was on the case, immediately requesting a retrial; one was set
  37. for Oct. 19. Now it seems Walsh is having second thoughts about
  38. that decision. Reportedly shocked over his failure to get a
  39. majority of the jury to convict on even one of the nine counts
  40. George is charged with, Walsh is consulting top legal eagles on
  41. whether to proceed. He's already feeling the heat from George
  42. supporters attacking the idea of another wasteful
  43. million-dollar trial. Besides, a second unsuccessful trial could
  44. undercut his last major effort, the trial of former Defense
  45. Secretary Caspar Weinberger, which begins Jan. 5.
  46. </p>
  47. <p>THE MAC ATTACK
  48. </p>
  49. <p>     Bill Clinton's answer to the Bush campaign's emphasis on
  50. noneconomic issues has been to show that he, unlike the
  51. President, has a plan. His latest strategy involves using
  52. Macintosh computers to launch a high-tech assault intended to
  53. inform voters of exactly what that plan is. Drop by your local
  54. Democratic Party headquarters, and you too can access the Bill
  55. Clinton Interactive Kiosk, a multimedia presentation complete
  56. with moving pictures in which voters can view the candidate
  57. speaking to a rapt audience on 12 topics such as defense, the
  58. economy and welfare reform. Voters can even take home a printout
  59. of the Clinton positions. The program is far from boring, but
  60. music fans will be disappointed to learn that it does not
  61. include any saxophone breaks played by the candidate.

  63. <p>LIGHTENING UP
  64. </p>
  65. <p>     Though his portly presence can be intense and forbidding,
  66. Acting Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger is blowing light
  67. fresh air into Foggy Bottom with the force of a hurricane. One
  68. jaw-dropping sign of change can be found on the laminated
  69. luggage tags used on official trips. Instead of the staid State
  70. Department seal, the tags now feature the "Little Larry Logo,"
  71. a jolly caricature of Eagleburger, briefcase in hand, tootling
  72. off to his next destination.
